AT KALIMA RESORT AND SPA, PHUKET
We all travel for different reasons and many of us would agree that one of the best things about travel is having new and unique experiences. Because people, culture, history, wildlife and scenery play such important roles in our travel experiences, protecting and supporting these things should be at the heart of every tourism and travel organisation, and every traveller.
Sustainability Progress Overview (2023–2025)
At Kalima Resort & Spa, Phuket, we are proud to share the measurable progress achieved through our continuous sustainability journey. From our base year 2023 to 2025, the resort successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions from 4,229,000 kgCO₂e to 3,716,980 kgCO₂e, representing a cumulative reduction of 12.11% over three years. This reflects the tangible outcome of our structured environmental strategy and reinforces our long-term climate commitment.
Our transition toward reusable and refillable alternatives significantly reduced single-use plastic consumption. In 2024, the resort eliminated over 179,722 plastic water bottles and 113,000 amenity bottles. While 2025 figures show 139,968 plastic bottles and 83,727 amenity bottles reduced, this reflects operational normalization following the full system conversion implemented in prior years, where refillable systems became standard across all guest rooms.
Waste management performance continued to strengthen. Food waste decreased from 74,860 kg (2023) to 56,716 kg (2025), achieving a 24.24% reduction compared with the base year. Recycling volume increased substantially from 23,620 kg to 36,808 kg, a 55.83% improvement, demonstrating higher diversion rates and more effective segregation practices. Waste generated per guest further improved from 1.12 kg in 2023 to 1.06 kg in 2025.
A major contributor to this progress has been the expansion of our recycling and resource recovery program. The resort strengthened waste segregation across all operational areas, enabling better capture of recyclable materials including paper, plastic, glass, aluminum, metal, and electronic waste. Partnerships with certified local recyclers ensured responsible downstream processing and traceability. In 2025 alone, over 36.8 tons of recyclable waste were diverted away from incineration and landfill, significantly reducing environmental impact and supporting Phuket’s circular economy ecosystem. The increasing recycling rate also played a key role in lowering overall waste intensity per occupied room.
The resort expanded its circular economy initiatives. Used cooking oil collected and diverted to Sustainable Aviation Fuel production increased to 2,224.5 kg in 2025, resulting in 291.55 kgCO₂e avoided. Organic waste reused for EM production rose to 1,044 kg, preventing an additional 2,641 kgCO₂e.
Our renewable energy capacity also grew. Solar power generation reached 160,863 kWh in 2025, contributing to an emissions avoidance of 80,415 kgCO₂e and strengthening our shift toward clean energy reliance.
These achievements demonstrate that sustainability at Kalima Resort & Spa, Phuket is not a one-time initiative, but a structured and evolving commitment driven by innovation, operational discipline, and the collective engagement of our associates, partners, and valued guests.
